Handbell Choir
The handbell choir has fourteen members and a few substitutes, and they meet each week to practice new music, new techniques, and have fun. The choir is directed by Beckie Wiley. They play approximately once per month, and during special occasions. They practice every Sunday evening from 7:00 p.m.to 8:30 p.m. in Rooms 11 and 12.
New members are always welcome. You should be able to read music, and instructions will be given to you so you can properly learn the technique of playing the handbells.
Asbury has a long history of playing handbells, when the first set of bells was purchased in the 1960s. The choir was directed by Ruth Moon.
Asbury now plays Schulmerich bells, and they have five full octaves plus the G2 bell, which weighs over 10 pounds!
On September 6, 2009, four of the Asbury Ringers practiced "Change Ringing" before the services started. They performed during the Introit. Performing here are Burlyne Wilson, Dottie Sherman, Sharmyn Crawford and Dick Crawford.
Listen to the Asbury Ringers play "Ding Dong Merrily" on December 2, 2007.
