2019-2020 Bus Ticket Drive

This season we kick off the fourth annual Bus Ticket drive to help provide much needed bus rides for members of our community who have no other form of transportation, and cannot afford to purchase tickets. Last year’s drive resulted in over 8,000 bus tickets donated to our neighbors in need. Many thanks to all who donated! This provided on average 11 round trip bus rides per day over the course of the year. And the need is even greater as both the homeless count and the ticket prices increase significantly. So this year we are striving for even more! The tickets were given to the following local organizations that provide direct services to people in need: Livermore Homeless Refuge, Open Heart KitchenAsbury United Methodist Church (for those who come for meals, showers and laundry),  Interfaith Sharing Food Pantry, Axis Community Healthy, Tri-Valley Haven, and Partners for Change. They in turn distributed the tickets to those most in need.

To get a sense of the value of bus tickets to this population, here are a few quotes from Donna McKenzie, coordinator of the Livermore Homeless Refuge:

“A bus ticket is not a Band-Aid but rather a life preserver for our friends living on the street, struggling in their day to day lives. The cold, rainy season is here, making it even more difficult for them to get around. Please help us help them.”

“Without a bus ticket, our homeless people are relatively immobile because of their circumstances. Transportation is crucial to their ability to move from one place to another. The bus ticket serves to offer an outlet for homeless with limited resources who must use public transit to access services, shelter, employment.”

“I personally have seen people miss appointments, opportunities to interview for a job, ability to get to the shower and/or meal….because they had no way to get there, …. especially difficult in the wet and cold weather.”

This year again, Livermore Amador Valley Transit Authority (LAVTA) is generously matching donations up to a total of $1500. Thank you LAVTA (also known as Wheels)!

Donations can be made in the following ways:

  1. Send a check, made out to Asbury United Methodist Church, with “BUS TICKETS” on the memo line. Mail to: Asbury United Methodist Church, 4743 East Avenue, Livermore, CA 94550. Please also write Bus Tickets on the envelope.
  2. Online (use the form below). Please note that when donating online, the courtesy fee that is charged to Asbury is added to the credit card charge so 100% of your donation goes to support the program.

Donations of any amount are welcome and very much appreciated!  Please note that 100% of all donations will be used to directly buy bus tickets for this drive. There is NO overhead whatsoever.

For those who have donated in the past, you will see that tickets have increased significantly in cost and changed in format. We now have two types of tickets available: Single Ride tickets are $2 each, and do not include a transfer. Day Passes are $3.75. With your donations we purchase a combination of the two tickets and distribute them as needed.

  1. John H Lubeck says

I know that we get some requests at Vineyard Church on Monday mornings, meals / showers / medical services / etc. I need to speak to Lynne as he sometimes has the tickets next Monday. However, who would I speak to, to arrange some for the Vineyard homeless services?

    • Hi John, I’m not sure who Lynne is, but you can contact the church office at 925-447-1950 or get in touch with Jacky Poulson about the bus tickets. Hope that helps.
