2020-21 Bus Ticket Drive

Wheels and Rapid Buses

This season we kick off the fifth annual Bus Ticket drive to help provide much needed bus rides for members of our community who have no other form of transportation, and cannot afford to purchase tickets.

With Covid-19, the need is greater than ever. 2020 has unfortunately seen an increase in our homeless population, and many others who have lost their jobs and are struggling to prevent homelessness. This year more than ever, the goal of the Bus Ticket Drive is to provide bus tickets to everyone in our community who needs public transportation and cannot afford the cost.

Your generous donations in the past have enabled us to distribute thousands of bus tickets to our neighbors in need. The tickets are given to the following local organizations that provide direct services to people in need: Livermore Homeless RefugeOpen Heart KitchenAsbury United Methodist Church (they provide free showers and laundry), Interfaith Sharing Food Pantry, Axis Community Health, and Tri-Valley Haven. They in turn distributed the tickets to those most in need. One of the primary ways in which the tickets are used is to get to these services for meals, groceries, health care, showers etc.

Here are a few quotes from Donna McKenzie, coordinator of the Livermore Homeless Refuge:

“A bus ticket is not a Band-Aid but rather a life preserver for our friends living on the street, struggling in their day to day lives. The cold, rainy season is here, making it even more difficult for them to get around. Please help us help them.”

“Without a bus ticket, our homeless people are relatively immobile because of their circumstances. Transportation is crucial to their ability to move from one place to another. The bus ticket serves to offer an outlet for homeless with limited resources who must use public transit to access services, shelter, employment.”

“I personally have seen people miss appointments, opportunities to interview for a job, ability to get to the shower and/or meal….because they had no way to get there, …. especially difficult in the wet and cold weather.”

Donations can be made in the following ways:

  1. Send a check, made out to Asbury United Methodist Church, with Bus Tickets on the memo line. Mail to: Asbury United Methodist Church, 4743 East Avenue, Livermore, CA 94550. Please also write Bus Tickets on the envelope, and include your email address so we can acknowledge your donation.
  2. Online (use the form below). Please note that when donating online, the courtesy fee that is charged to Asbury is added to the credit card charge so 100% of your donation goes to support the program.

Donations of any amount are welcome and very much appreciated!  Please note that 100% of all donations will be used to directly buy bus tickets for this drive. There is NO overhead whatsoever.

For those who have donated in the past, you will see that the options have changed. Wheels has worked with us to create a new “24 hour pass,” a very efficient way for our passengers to take an unlimited number of rides during a 24-hour period for $3.75. All donations will purchase these passes.
