From Pastor Kathy…

As many of you know this fall we are embarking on a capital campaign to fund our new proposed office building. I have to confess normally I wouldn’t be in favor of a new office building—usually feeling something else is more important (like children’s classrooms, Sanctuary and Fellowship Hall). However, the reality is that our office building is worn out. It is a modular building that was bought used over 40 years ago and has serviced us well. I wasn’t in the building during the recent earthquake but I heard from others that it really felt like the building was going to collapse. We have really noticed its deterioration in the last 6 months. So a capital campaign and office building are on our agenda.

The initial team drawn together to begin working on the campaign interviewed and hired (with Church Council approval) Kurt Appel of Missio Dei ( I have worked with Kurt on two prior Capital Campaigns and found him to be a man of deep faith, great understanding of stewardship and capital campaigns, a team player, nice sense of humor, and a wonderful guy to lead us in such work.  In both prior campaigns, he helped the church to over subscribe their goal!

Everyone will have the opportunity to meet Kurt at our Congregational Orientation on Sunday, September 8 following worship—lunch will be provided (Please note this is a different date than first announced. We hope you will make every effort to attend. If you are helping to get the big fund raiser ready for Fertile Groundworks, you are excused :)! Recruiting folks to help with the capital campaign will take place in the next few months. I hope you will say yes when called!

I also want to thank Ron Logan for Chairing the Building Committee; to Chuk Campos, Ruth Hawley, Roger Everett, Scott Smith, Dick Crawford, Patty Baker for serving as members and to Dave David for being an advisory member.

Steve and I will be on vacation from August 5-27. Pastor Chelsea will be here most of the time when I am gone. She will attend Camp Shelley weekend so Don Fado will preach on August 18. Don is a retired United Methodist Pastor, the father of one of Asbury’s former pastors and a great preacher. If you are not at Camp Shelley, I hope you will make every effort to be in worship.

As always I am glad to talk with you about anything I have written or anything else.

Grace and Peace,

Pastor Kathy
