From Pastor Kathy…

From Kathy…

When I first moved to Asbury, a statement that was told to me by many Asburyites was this:  if there is a need just let us know and we will meet that need!”  Such wonderful words for me to hear as your new pastor. And it’s been true! When we helped an amazing number of people last fall with our Pastor’s fund and spent it into negative numbers, you responded positively and not only got us back into the black but with enough funds to continue to help those in need.  So now, I am telling you the church needs your help! This time it is for our general budget. We need about $66,000 in additional giving to make our 2020 budget which includes increased dollars in maintenance (the Trustees have developed a 10- year maintenance plan to keep our campus in great shape and we need to spend more on maintenance than we have in the past.) The name General Budget is not an exciting phrase but the ministry and mission that the General Budget supports and makes possible is—our music program, worship, providing facilities for many non-profits to help and improve our community, supporting the work of our small groups and Sunday connection, supporting our Stephen Ministry program, local mission such as Tri-Valley Haven, care givers group, etc.  Pick your favorite way to be in mission and ministry, your favorite to connect with God and your favorite way to connect with others and you will discover that the general budget supports this and makes it possible.  There is more information about our “Close the Gap” January appeal from the Stewardship Committee in this edition of Asbury Articles.

General Conference (the world wide conference of the church) is only 4 months away. There are many proposals to re-structure or divide our denomination in order to address the impasse that we have reached on fully including all of God’s people at all levels into the life of our church. I will be writing and commenting on these proposals over the next several months and encourage your questions, thoughts and perspectives. I encourage you to bookmark these 3 sites and check them regularly: The official website for the General Conference  https://www.resourceumc.org/en/churchwide/general-conference-2020 ;  Mainstreamumc offers a great deal of information on bringing the middle and the progressive arms of the church together in the United States https://mainstreamumc.com/ ; and The Western Jurisdiction continues in its role as a beacon of hope http://westernjurisdictionumc.org/ .  There is Mediation Group that has been meeting with representatives of all the major view points and they will present a proposal to be ratified by General Conference –read about it here:   https://www.umnews.org/en/news/church-future-under-negotiation-before-gc2020 .  Also interesting is the Christmas Covenant offered by delegates from the Central Conference (Europe, the Philippines and Africa) https://www.umnews.org/en/news/delegates-offer-proposal-for-church-unity . And I hope many people will check out this website and participate as they feel called, if you want pastoral help on any of these activities that are suggested please don’t hesitate to ask: https://resistharm.com/ .  I serve as a reserve (alternate) clergy delegate to the 2020 General Conference and will be attending the Conference in May.  Please pray for our denomination regularly as we approach what truly believe will be a defining moment in the life of United Methodists. (If you don’t have access to internet, please feel free to come into the church office and check out these websites and articles).

As always I am happy to talk with you about anything I have written about or any other matters.

Blessings,

Pastor Kathy
