Livermore’s Interfaith Backpack Project is in its third decade of providing school backpacks, filled with educational supplies , to children from families who are unable to afford many of the expenses that come with starting school. The recipients are chosen based on recommendations from teachers or other individuals, such as pastors.
Asbury, a founding member of this project, is one of 13 congregations that distribute over 800 backpacks each year to Livermore school children. Asbury’s 2016 commitment is for 100 middle/high-school backpacks. These will be funded through a special offering on July 10th or by making a donation anytime during July. Just designate your donation to “Backpacks.” This year’s backpacks cost $45 each and include a $20 shoe certificate.
On Thursday, July 14th we’ll be stuffing the backpacks with school supplies after Dine and Dawdle. The backpacks will be distributed the morning of Saturday, August 13th. Members of the congregation, over 18 years of age, are invited to help with the distribution. Contact Austin Gnecco for more details. Austin is leading this year’s Program as his Eagle Scout Project.
