Worship Themes for July

New Series: Based on Phillip Gulley’s book, If the Church Were Christian: Rediscovering the Values of Jesus, this sermon series looks at the practices that Jesus taught us to incorporate into daily living that would bring us closer to God and create a more loving and just community among those who say they follow the Way of Christ.

July 5, 2020   Fifth Sunday after Pentecost; Communion; Title:   Those Who Follow Jesus Are Wounded Healers; Scripture:  Matthew 5:18-26 (The Message Version); Theme:  Wounded healers affirm our potential as more important than condemning our brokenness and practice reconciliation over judging others.

July 12, 2020   Sixth Sunday after Pentecost; Title: Those Who Follow Jesus Live in the Here and Now; Scripture:  Luke 14: 1-6 (The Message Version); Theme:  Meeting the needs would be more important than maintaining institutions and this life would be more important than the afterlife.

July 19, 2020; Seventh Sunday after Pentecost; Title:   Those Who Follow Jesus Put Power in its Place; Scripture:1 Corinthians 13:1-7 (The message Translation); Theme:  Peace would be more important than power and the church would care more about the quality of love in our relationships and less about the act of sex.

July 26, 2020; Eighth Sunday after Pentecost; Title:   Those who Follow Jesus: Jesus is Our Model Not Our Idol; Scripture:  Matthew 7:21-29 (The Message Version); Theme: The early church believed that Jesus was a model for living rather than an object of worship and therefore, emphasized practicing gracious behavior rather than cultivating “right belief.”.

August 2, 2020; Ninth Sunday after Pentecost; Communion; Title: Those Who Follow Jesus Welcome the Other”. Theme: Willingness to extend hospitality to strangers is fundamental to the Christian way of life. And it may be that today, in our shrinking global village of limited natural resources, the practice of hospitality to strangers may, again, be a matter of human survival. Text: Deuteronomy 10:12-21 and Leviticus 19:33-34.
