Livermore Community Blood Drive Update

Thomas Petty Donating Blood Unit #109

My wife, Joanne, and I started the Livermore Community Blood Drive in December 2002. At that time, we had no social media and no real effective way to email groups of people, so most of the recruitment for the blood drive was accomplished by burning up the phone lines. What started as an every-other-month drive with about 30 units collected each time, it has morphed into a monthly blood drive that regularly collects 50-60 units every month, making it in the top 10% of all community blood drives in the nation and the largest community drive in the Bay Area.

On average, blood donors across the country donate 1.7 times per year. We, on the other hand, have amazing, loyal donors at the Livermore drive that stick out their arm six times per year (or three times per year with the “Power Red” double-donation), smashing the “average” donor stats.

In the nearly 17 years that we’ve been hosting the blood drive, we’ve held 135 blood drives and collected nearly 7500 units of blood. That’s enough to fill almost eighteen 55 gallon drums, and has gone to help over 22,000 people! That’s a huge local impact, which even included helping to save my wife’s life when she needed nearly four gallons of plasma during an extended hospitalization a few years ago.

With all that, I’ve decided to step back and “retire” from being the sponsor of the blood drive. It’s time for me to take some time for myself and find my next “thing”, whatever that is. Tony Gnecco and Don Faul have both volunteered to take the helm of the drive and keep it going just like it has for the last seventeen years as co-sponsors. For that, I thank them both for stepping into this role.

If you’d like to donate blood, please visit redcrossblood.org and use ASBURY925 as the sponsor code, or search your zip code if you’re not in Livermore. You can download the Red Cross blood app for your phone and manage your appointments and even do your Rapid Pass health history right on your phone.

I will continue to be a regular donor every other month, and Joanne will still volunteer at the drive snack table with her dog Kobe. So we’ll both see you at the drive!

Thank you all from the bottom of my heart for supporting the drive over the years, and to those who have and continue to donate blood, you’re amazing. It’s been quite a run (so far!).
