Meet Asbury’s New Part-time Minister of Congregational Care

We welcome Heather Leslie Hammer as our new part-time Minister of  Pastoral Care beginning July 1, 2020. Heather is a retired United Methodist Minister having served three churches in the California-Nevada Conference during her active ministry: San Ramon Valley UMC (Alamo), St. John’s UMC (Rohnert Park), and Lynnewood UMC (Pleasanton). In retirement she has served Byron UMC from January 2019 – June 2020. Before being ordained, Heather was a teacher of German, history, and English.

Heather grew up in Berkeley and received degrees in international relations from American University and education from the University of Maryland. After serving in the Peace Corps in Micronesia and teaching English as a second language, she raised a family in Livermore. Her husband, Jim, is a physicist at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. She has two adult children: Sepp (Oakland) and Leslie (Penngrove).

Heather is not new to many of us! She and her family joined Asbury in 1979. Her call to ordained ministry came following the sudden death of their son, Eric, in 2001. She finds great joy in pastoring. Heather is passionate about preaching, music, meeting all sorts of people, cooking and when possible, traveling!

As Pastor Chelsea spends 25% of her time planting a new church in Dublin, Pastor Heather will focus on pastoral care, leading/teaching some small groups and working with our Congregational Care Team. Let us give a warm welcome to Heather in her new role with Asbury!
