Kathy and Steve

Hello Asbury!

Steve and I are looking forward to our move and beginning the process of becoming acquainted–learning your names and hearing your stories. I’ve learned that Asbury is a gracious community who likes to gather for fellowship and laughter. I know you are committed to assisting the vulnerable in your midst and that you are doing this in very tangible ways such as providing the shower and laundry ministry, hosting meals on your campus and supporting Partners for Change. I also know you care for your beautiful campus!

I thought I might share a bit about Steve and me. I am one of those persons called a cradle Methodist. I was baptised at First UMC of Napa when I was an infant and grew up in that church. My family had a very small ranch when I was young. We were egg farmers until my Dad went to work in town. Eventually our ranch grew Christmas trees and grapes. I earned my B.A. in Spanish and Pre-Ministerial at the University of the Pacific in Stockton and my Masters of Divinity at Drew University School of Theology in Madison, New Jersey. I have an elder brother, Mike, who lives in Lake County with his wife, Mary. Mike has two adult children and his son has three children. My father died from cancer when I was 25 and my mother lives at the Meadows, a senior living facility in Napa (where Heather Hammer’s mother lived until recently). Some of you may have met my mother, Donna, when she worked as the Administrative Secretary for Bishops Kelly, Talbert and Shamana or when she was president of the Annual Conference United Methodist Women. I love to travel, read, attend theater, go to movies, snorkel, and walk.

Asbury is my fifth Appointment. I served for three years at First UMC, Modesto as an Associate, seven years in Linden as the solo pastor, four years in Sutter Creek as the pastor, and 21 years in Elk Grove as the pastor.

Steve and I met when I was in Linden. I walked by his automotive shop everyday to get the mail–I will let him tell the story. He has lived all over the country as his Dad was a Marine helicopter pilot. Steve has an older sister, Candy, who lives in Calgary, Canada with her husband, adult children and lots of grandchildren. His younger sister, Pam, lives in Orange County with her husband and adult daughter. Steve owned and operated an automotive repair shop for 21 years and then closed his business and went to work as airplane and helicopter mechanic which he liked much better. He is now retired. Steve had an unusual kind of stroke in 2005. As a result he doesn’t have short term memory (so he will need help with your names) and he doesn’t have right peripheral vision which means he won’t know you are standing on the right side of him until you say something. Steve traveled for five years with Randy Sparks and the Back Porch Majority as their light and sound man. We were delighted to see that Randy will be in Livermore at the end of July with the New Christy Minstrels so we plan to see that show. Steve enjoys all things to do with flying, using his apps on his iPhone, likes to travel and snorkel.
