Pastoral Announcement to Asbury UMC

Letter to Burlyne Wilson, SPRC Chair, 4/24/2018

Dear Sisters and Brothers of Asbury United Methodist Church,

Grace and peace to you in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. My thoughts and prayers are with you. It is with great joy that I inform you that after much prayer and consultation, it is Bishop Minerva G. Carcaño’s intent to appoint the Reverend Kathy La Point-Collup to serve as your Senior Pastor effective July 1, 2018.

Pastor Kathy is an experienced pastor who has provided extensive leadership in the conference for many years. She is currently the Co-chair of the ‘Order of Elders’ and trains other pastors in the area of clergy boundary. She is also a co-chair of the ‘Children in Poverty Committee’. Pastor Kathy’s previous appointments have included First UMC of Modesto as an Associate Pastor, Senior Pastor at Linden UMC in Linden, Senior Pastor at Sutter Creek UMC in Sutter Creek, and most recently as Senior Pastor of Elk Grove UMC in Elk Grove. Pastor Kathy is an excellent preacher, teacher and an administrator.

I’ve been impressed with the fruitfulness of her transformational ministry. Pastor Kathy is uniquely gifted to lead Asbury United Methodist Church into further growth and vitality as you strive to reach new people in your community and invite them into the grace-filled journey as Christ’s disciples.

Pastor Kim and Pastor Kathy will work together with your lay leadership for a smooth and effective leadership transition. On behalf of Bishop Carcaño, I thank you for the great insights and prayers your Pastor and SPRC have offered throughout this process and I anticipate even greater things from your congregation as we journey onward.

Finally, I ask for your prayers during this important time of transition for Pastor Kathy and her spouse Steve. I trust that you will welcome them warmly. Please also pray for Pastor Kim and her spouse Steve, as they prepare for their move. Please also pray for the vitality of the wonderful faith community that is Asbury United Methodist Church of Livermore.

Rev. Shinya Goto
El Camino Real District Superintendent
